TURNING POINTS: the making of the podcast series: TURNING POINTS : the making of the podcast series: TURNIGN POINTS: the making of the podcast series:
👋️ The feature film is broken into five chapters as if you are watching five “vlog” episodes. Each episode has its own title and click-bait thumbnail. After every episode there will be corresponding video-reviews. These are real reaction from strangers that our team solicited from Craigslist.
Episode 1: How do you make a million dollar movie by 25?
![]()
It’s Fall 2021, I just finished my first feature film GOD’S TIME. But, I’m in the midst of various crises: My cousin just died, I have an alarming side pain, and I have no idea what film I want to make next. My solution is to pitch a ‘podcast series’ called Turning Points to X Co, a real-estate company financed by the private equity firm that funded my debut film. If the podcast gets green-lit, I’ll hopefully be able to process my grief, get health insurance to see a doctor, and, most importantly, figure out what my next movie should be. (BTW Here’s Episode 1 😘 – password: mememe
)
After this episode, we show you the first batch of video-reviews we solicited from people on Craigslist, like Cheryl Branscum:
Episode 2: How do you laugh at your dad’s death?
![]()
I pitch Season One of the podcast series to Noah Himmel, Senior VP of Operations at X Co. I tell him that I’d like to go to Hawaii to research my next film while also recording the podcast there. Noah love the concept, but says he “isn’t gonna pay for a glorified vacation.” Instead he wants to see a small scale pilot.
So I go to Joshua tree to interview my best friend Jordan about his dad’s death. To get a good interview I push Jordan to confront his terrible coping mechanisms. In turn, I face my own grief. Noah loves the pilot, but he needs to hear my plan for the whole series… Before I open my mouth he blurts, “I doesn’t want to hear another word about Hawaii!”
BTW – Are you wondering how Cheryl, the ex-Regional Manager of Denny’s, is doing? We did too. So we reached back out to her and all of the Craiglist reviewers. We asked them to review this new episode and to ask them follow up questions about their various crises.
Episode 3: How do you outsource your day job?
![]()
Hawaii isn’t an option, and I’m busy with writing my movie. So I pitch Noah an insane campaign to outsource the podcast series to viewers like you on the streets of New York City. X Co. approves the new plan.
Not only that, but Noah from X also finds a way to get me health insurance. I race to the hospital to get medical tests. Faced with my medical crisis head on I decide there’s not time like the present – I gotta go to Hawaii!
And yes! We send this episode to our Craigslist Reviewers along with new follow up questions.
Episode 4: How do you go to Hawaii for free?
![]()
I tell Noah that we can vertically integrate my Hawaiian feature film with our podcast series. I’ll simply interview folks for the podcast about the subject of my feature film. I explain to Noah that in 2018 everyone in Hawaii thought they were going to die for 40 minutes becasue of a false missle alarm. I asure him that it must have been a Turning Point in their lives.
Noah relents and pays for my trip to Hawaii. I go to the archapeligo and interview a slew of folks. But it turns out that this disasourts false missle alarm wasn’t a ‘turning point’ for any of them.
I pivot and ask what were some real turning points in their lives… The answers I find are unsettling truths about Hawaii and meaningful personal narratives about change. One man in particular tells me, “There are no turns in his life. I’m just on a journey...”
Episode 5: How do you become a famous artist?
![]()
I premiere my debut feature GOD’S TIME at Tribeca. The crowd roars, but behind the scenes I need to face reality. I sit down with Noah and the Turning Points team for one final interview. I tell the team that my doctor called with my test results. It turns out, my side pain is stress-related. I need to calm down. So I can’t make this podcast anymore... But I do know what my next movie is.
This! You are watching it right now. This! You are watching it right now.
As we cut to a wide shot we reveal that we are really in art gallery. Not only that, but there is also a live audience watching this final interview. I explain to everyone the trials of making this ‘vlog series’: how it brought back my wretched side pain, that I had to manufacture a new division at X Co just to get health insurance, and that I’ve leveraged this whole opportunity to go through another transformation...
I began this journey as a podcast host, evolved into a vlogger, and now I can assume my final form: conceptual artist! Some people say, when you’re in a hole stop digging. I say, turn it into art. There doesn’t need to be a point to all of this. Maybe the point is the turning.
